Overview

Building healthy habits, happy minds and connected communities.

Baw Baw’s Healthy Kids Week is a fun and engaging Shire-wide initiative designed to support children’s wellbeing across four key pillars: Literacy, Movement, Healthy Eating, and Mindfulness.

Held each October, Baw Baw's Healthy Kids Week encourages primary schools to get involved in simple, classroom-friendly activities that boost health, participation and whole-school connection.

Introduced in place of Walk to School Week, Healthy Kids Week offers a more holistic approach to children’s wellbeing while keeping the fun, colour and friendly competition our schools love.

The Four Pillars of Wellbeing

Healthy Kids Week focuses on four areas that help students grow strong, confident and ready to learn—inside and outside of the classroom.

  1. Literacy Day – Reading Relay

Students read, listen, imagine and explore! Schools track total reading minutes per class and race to see who can reach the highest total.

  2. Move It Day – Walk, Ride, Scoot or Lap the Oval

Every step counts! Students can walk, ride or scoot to school, or complete laps of the school oval.

  3. Healthy Eating Day – Healthy Eating Bingo

Students bring colourful, whole-food snacks and meals, aiming to tick off as many healthy options as possible.

  4. Mindful Me Day – Classroom Mindfulness

A calm, reflective day encouraging breathing exercises, grounding, gratitude, journaling and other simple mindfulness moments.

Hear more about the positive outcomes from Baw Baw's Healthy Kids Week 2025

Drouin South:

“Our school really enjoyed taking part in Baw Baw Healthy Kids Week. We loved having a different focus each day - from moving our bodies, eating well and caring for our minds. It was a great reminder that being healthy isn’t just about one thing but about finding balance in all the areas of our lives that make us feel good. The activities encouraged our students to think about what helps them feel their best. Winning the Reading Challenge was the perfect way to celebrate such a positive week!” Belinda Moore – Inclusion and Wellbeing Leader.

Trafalgar Primary:

  • “We wanted to share with you that the arts and craft supplies supplied as our prize have been put toward our Craft and Connect club. Our Craft and Connect club is a safe space for students seeking an alternative to outside yard play that is facilitated by staff to encourage and grow social and emotional learning all while exploring ways to be expressive through art.

Our school is very grateful for the opportunity to have been involved with the Healthy Kids Tournament and for the time and effort yourself and others at Baw Baw Shire put into the program. And of course, a big thank you for the awesome prize!” Aerin Vennard – Mental Health in Primary Schools Leader.

Drouin Primary:

“The kids really got behind it and it was a fantastic vibe across the school over the whole week. Some of the veggies that arrived in lunchboxes just because the bingo day was on was incredible! One student even brought a Brussel sprout! Our older students smashed our laps around the oval to add to our tally, but even the Oreos got out there and had a go. Was great to see. “ Michelle West – Health teacher/ Well-being Team.
