Commonwealth Home Support Program

Commonwealth Home Support Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and is for people aged over 65 (or over 50 for First Nations People).

As you get older, it can become harder to do things on your own. The Commonwealth Government provides services in the home to eligible seniors.

This program is an introductory program and many people start off with the home maintenance service to clean spouting and windows. Services provided are designed to help with everyday living, health care, personal care, accommodation, home modifications and mobility equipment. 

An interview with an assessor will check your eligibility. 

Eligibility

People eligible for government funded services are people 65 and over or Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island people 50 and over who need help to do the things around the home that they used to be able to do themselves.

My Aged Care

The first step in accessing these services is to contact My Aged Care. My Aged Care is a National Federal Government Agency who will help you navigate your way into accessing services.  The number for My Aged Care is 1800 200 422 (Free Call)

The My Aged Care website includes information that has been translated into 18 languages.

People who speak a language other than English can also phone the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450. The TIS staff will facilitate a call to the My Aged Care contact centre on the person’s behalf.

People who are deaf or who have a hearing or speech impairment can contact My Aged Care through:

  • Calling the National Relay Service on 1800 555 677 and asking for My Aged Care on 1800 200 422; or
  • Accessing the National Relay Service Website and choosing ‘Make an internet relay call’ and entering 1800 200 422.

Home Care Packages

This program supports older people with complex care needs to live independently in their own homes.

There are four level of packages, one being the lowest. The package is a grant of money to be used to cover the cost of some in home services. Learn more about the program here.

My Aged Care

There are 5 steps to take to receive a Home Care Package:

  1. Check your eligibility by ringing My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 (Free Call). An Assessor will be booked to visit you or to talk with you over the phone. 
  2. When accepted find a Home Care Package Provider. A provider can be found on the following link. Find a provider | My Aged Care
  3. The Home Care Package Provider will discuss the costs of the package. There could be a basic daily fee and an income-tested fee. 
  4. Accept the Home Care Package.
  5. Begin service. 

Can I manage the Home Care Package myself? 

You can self-manage your package; however, you will still need to work through a Home Care Package Provider. You will need to find a provider who delivers a self-managed service.
