Community Gardens

When people come together in a shared space to grow, cook, eat and celebrate food together, there is a strong feeling of community spirit that is heart-warming.

Interest in community gardens throughout Victoria and Australia is growing with new community gardens being planned and built every day. Increased interest and growth in community gardens is accelerating as people crave genuine community interaction and inclusion. There is a strong link between community health, gardening and food security.

There is positive potential for urban agriculture initiatives to address food issues today and into the future.

Baw Baw Shire has community gardens and orchards popping up all over the municipality in Jindivick, Drouin, Longwarry, Trafalgar, Warragul and Yarragon.

The gardens are providing significant opportunities for people to connect, build skills, enjoy the outdoors and plant, grow, produce and eat their own food.

Growing Together Baw Baw has just completed the Eastern Park Community Garden behind the Warragul Community House in Warragul.

The garden is bordered by espalier fruit trees and features at least ten individual veggie plots, as well as shared plots that will be open to the public at all times.

Local businesses, community groups and schools have generously provided their support to the project by donating seedlings, garden equipment and volunteer hours with over 3000 volunteer hours.

Baw Baw Shire Council provided $39,400 to the project, with the Victorian Government contributing a further $118,000 from the Regional Growth Fund.
