Residential Care

An aged care facility (sometimes known as a nursing home or residential aged care facility) is for older people who can no longer live at home and need ongoing help with everyday tasks or health care.

Residential care in an aged care home can be provided on a permanent or short-term basis. Short-term care in an aged care home is called residential respite care.

You can check your eligibility for these facilities by contacting My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 (Free Call). An Assessor will be booked to visit you or to talk with you over the phone.

After you have had an assessment and received a letter to say that you are approved for entry into an aged care facility, you will need to:

  • Find a suitable residential care facility.
  • Compare fees and charges.
  • Apply to the aged residential care facility and enter into agreements.
  • Manage your care and services.
