All Victorian Councils are required to standardise bin lid colours to meet the Victorian Government’s kerbside reforms under the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021.

What you need to do:

  • Please place your dark green lid bin on the kerbside as normal on its next regular collection day.
  • Leave your dark green lid bin on the kerbside until the end of the day.
  • If your bin lid has not been changed over by the end of that collection day, please bring your bin in and return it to the kerbside again on its next regular collection day.

Solo Resource Recovery will be changing over bin lids on your bin collection day.

The changeover is expected to be complete by early 2026.

If your dark green bin lid has not been replaced by 31 January 2026, please call Solo Resource Recovery on (03) 5623 8400.

Please see below for Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need new bin lids when some seem to be in good condition?

Bin lids will only be replaced on mixed recycling and garden organics bins that are still fitted with a dark green lid. This update will bring all bins under standardised lid colours as required by Victorian Government policy.

Under the standardised system, the bin lid colours are:

  • Mixed Recycling – Yellow
  • Glass Recycling – Purple
  • Garden Organics – Light Green
  • General Rubbish – Red

What are the benefits of standardising bin lid colours?

Standardised bin lid colours will reduce confusion by different bin lid colours in other areas of the state.

With all Victorian households having standardised bin lid colours, it will make it easier to know what items go in each bin. This will help improve recycling, decrease contamination and reduce waste sent to landfill.

This means whether you’re visiting friends and family, travelling on holiday or moving to a new place in Victoria, your bin lid colours will be the same – making it easier to sort your waste and recycling correctly.

When will Council be introducing the Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) service?

Your current green bin will transition to a Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin next year.

From July 2026, food scraps can be placed along with garden clippings in your green bin.

Until then, please continue to use your green garden organics bin for garden clippings only.

Find out more information regarding the introduction of the Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) service here.

How do I find my current waste collection schedule and bin collection day?
