Letters will begin delivery to 1600 households in the vicinity of the intersection between Weebar Road and Main South Road in Drouin this week as Baw Baw Shire Council rallies community to help advocate for funding to upgrade a number of critical intersections.
As part of our recently endorsed advocacy priorities, we are calling on the State Government to fund these significant road upgrades, which include the construction of the Weebar Road roundabout in Drouin, traffic lights to be installed at Burke and Howitt Street in Warragul, and traffic lights to be installed at Princes Way and Wellwood Road in Drouin.
With the dramatic population growth in Baw Baw Shire in recent years, these intersections are highly congested during peak traffic times, with a greatly increased risk of traffic accidents and ongoing negative affects to business and liveability in these areas.
Ongoing delay to the construction of the Weebar Road roundabout has created knock-on effects beyond the intersection itself, causing delay on other vital projects such as a new local primary school and recreation facilities to support residents living in parts of Drouin, as well as new housing developments for Drouin’s rapidly growing population.
The letters will hit nearby mailboxes this week and contain a brief explanation about the campaign and a QR code to a pre-written letter.
Residents can then personalise the letter if they wish and click ‘send’ for it to go to the relevant MPs and Ministers.
Flyers will also be mailed in coming weeks to residents who live in the vicinity of the intersection between Wellwood Road and Princes Way in Drouin, and the Burke Street and Howitt Street intersection in Warragul.
Businesses in the area are in the process of receiving flyers and posters to join in the campaign.
The intersections at Burke Street and Howitt Street in Warragul and Princes Way and Wellwood Road in Drouin are part of the arterial road network, which is under increasing pressure as the local population grows.
These two intersections see a huge increase in the flow of traffic from their original purpose and they are no longer safe for the community to use.
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Councillor Kate Wilson says that the government must prioritise this investment to ensure the safety and liveability of our communities.
“Council is calling on the State Government to fund $4.4 million for the construction of the Weebar Road roundabout.
“This will not only provide greater safety and improved traffic movement but also unlock the early delivery of an additional 2,521 homes in alignment with state and federal housing targets.
“Baw Baw is growing and changing, and upgrading these intersections is a vital step in ensuring our region continues to thrive well into the future.
“Baw Baw is ready to go. We just need the funding to make it happen.”
Cr Ben Lucas encourages all residents to get in on the action.
“The more voices we have saying loudly that this is what we need, the better chance our advocacy efforts have of being recognised. Let the State Government know that Baw Baw won’t be overlooked.”
