Rollo Street Park

Rollo Street Park is undergoing a $1.77 million redevelopment, following a strong desire from the local community for this area to be repurposed.

The project will see the vacant land of the old Yarragon Primary School transformed into a valuable community open space that accommodates passive recreation and community events.

Key features of the upgrades will include:

  • The planting of more than 60 trees
  • The resealing of Hanns Lane with diagonal parking
  • A walking path
  • Seating
  • A drinking fountain
  • Bike racks
  • Rain gardens
  • Improved drainage
  • New bollards and fencing
  • Shelter
  • Signage
  • Artwork.

Background

The site at 3-5 Rollo Street, Yarragon was the original location of the Yarragon Primary School from 1879 to 2013. In 2019, Council resolved to purchase the site to retain it as a community asset for use as public open space.

Through a master plan completed in 2021 and further input from a project reference group (PRG) in Yarragon, the park redevelopment works will include the planting of 63 new trees, the sealing of Hanns Lane with diagonal parking, a loop walking path, seating, a drinking fountain, bike racks, rain gardens, and fencing.

Following a competitive tender process, Sustainable Landscaping Pty Ltd was successful in securing the contract and commenced works on-site in November 2024.

The second stage of works includes shelter, signage, and artwork.

Project funding

This $1.77 million dollar project will be jointly funded by Council and the Victorian Government through its Growing Suburbs Fund.

Project updates

December 2024

The contractor commenced on-site in November and started with the demolition of the old chain mesh fencing. Hanns Lane and the area for new angle parking was excavated in late November but due to a period of wet weather, works were temporarily slowed down.

As weather conditions improved, the gravel road base for the laneway and car parking area could be imported and compacted. Other works that have been completed include the installation of a new water meter for garden maintenance and the drinking fountain, a stormwater drainage pipe within Hanns Lane, and earthworks for the new loop path.

Hanns Lane will be temporarily reopened to residents only during the Christmas period. Sustainable Landscaping will return to site on 13 January 2025 to resume works.

February 2025

Sustainable Landscaping re-commenced work in January 2025. As of February 2025, garden beds have been excavated and are being prepared, concrete has been completed for new parking bays in Hanns Lane, concreting is in progress for the park’s loop footpath, and preparations are being made for the Hanns Lane asphalt traffic lane.

May 2025

The centre grass area has been levelled and hydroseeded, park furniture has been installed, the Hanns Lane crossovers have been completed, asphalt has been laid in the laneway, and the fencing, bollards, and edge strip have been installed. All that remains for Stage 1 is for the turf and planting to establish. Preliminary Stage 2 work is underway, including the design of a new shelter, the engagement of an artist for an interactive artwork, and the finalisation of signage design.

October 2025

Stage 1, which included landscaping, Hanns Lane car park and sealing, footpath, and drainage, is now complete.

Stage 2 works, which include the shelter, signage, and artwork are currently underway.

  • The bronze sculpture art pieces are currently being manufactured and are expected to be completed by early November. They will be installed on some large granite boulders which have already been placed on-site.
  • A builder has been engaged and construction of the shelter is expected to commence late October/early November and be completed in December. Various signage will also be installed around the park.

Temporary fencing is currently in place around the whole park. Following completion of the artwork, temporary fencing will be adjusted to allow wider access where required.
