Drouin’s Commercial Lane Precinct is a set for improvement works to revitalise the area and improve safety, accessibility and activation for all users.

Proposed works have been carefully considered with user experience in mind and aim to elevate the precinct as a valued community space by:

  • Improving pedestrian accessibility and address existing accessibility constraints.
  • Improving safety, quality and amenity of public space.
  • Make laneways connecting Commercial Place to Princes Way valued public spaces.
  • Encourage usage and development as a commercial frontage, not just a back of shop service/utility area

The proposed scope of works include:

  • Laneway improvements works including paving, gardens, lighting and opportunities for murals and public art.
  • Returning Commercial Place to a partial one-way street from the upper carpark area to the Woolworths carpark entry to enable footpath widening, pedestrian crossing safety improvements, new street furniture and gardens/trees (cars can still enter and exit at Hope Street).
  • New wayfinding signage throughout the area and laneways.
  • Maintaining access for service and delivery vehicles while better defining pedestrian spaces.

Why Commercial Place

Council is currently advocating the State Government for the funding required to allow Regional Roads Victoria to plan for and design solutions to the traffic congestion in both Drouin and Warragul.

Any works undertaken within the CBDs of Drouin and Warragul need to be informed by these designs to ensure they are complimentary and maximise the benefits of each component to the towns overall.

Commercial Place presents an opportunity for Council to vastly improve the appeal of the Drouin CBD while encouraging development and commercial usage without pre-empting and compromising the integration between Council's road network and future changes to the state managed arterial road network.
