Specialised Waste Collections

Run by Sustainability Victoria, Detox Your Home is a safe, free service to dispose of toxic, unwanted household chemicals.

Mobile drop-off days are scheduled at Council-owned locations around Victoria. 

Accepted items:

• Household - Detergents, disinfectants, Cooking oils, cosmetics  
• Garden - Fertilisers, herbicides, weed killers, poisons  
• Car - wax, transmission fluid, body filler, brake fluid  
• Fuels and flammable liquids – turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel, paint thinners  
• Aerosol cans (including those containing paint but not cans of paint) 
• Gas cylinders, for example, acetylene (helium for party balloons) and more. 

Chemicals that CANNOT be accepted include:

• Paint tins (this can be dropped at council transfer station sites) 
• Thermometers/thermostats containing mercury (note we can accept mercury in a container) 
• Motor oil (this can be dropped at council transfer station sites)

Farm chemicals are not accepted at this collection.

Permanent Collection Facilities

A permanent collection facility is located at the Morwell Transfer Station, Porters Street Morwell, phone 1300 367 700.

Acceptable Items for Permanent Chemical Collection

Permanent facilities only accept a limited range of household chemicals products including:

• Paint
• Household batteries
• Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent globes

Unacceptable Items for Permanent Chemical Collection

• Containers larger than 20 litres
• LPG gas automotive fuel tanks
• Chemicals used for commercial and industrial purposes
• Household chemicals not listed in the previous bullet points

Contact the operator to confirm the following before travelling to a permanent site:

• The range of chemical products accepted
• Any limits on the amount of chemicals you can drop without charge
• Opening days and times

The community can now dispose of unwanted x-rays at the Drouin customer service centre by placing them in the secure x-ray disposal bins located in the reception area. Photo and film negatives can also be placed in the x-ray bin, as long as they are not in plastic pockets.

There is silver contained in the x-rays which can be recycled.

X-rays dropped into the bins at our customer service centre will be sent to a refinery for processing where the silver is extracted and re-used for a variety of purposes such as making jewellery, silver plating of utensils and electrical components.

Residents can also dispose of unwanted x-rays in secure x-ray disposal bins at the West Gippsland Hospital and at Regional Imaging, 29 Mason Street, Warragul.

Council is pleased to offer this free X-Ray disposal service to the community which will assist in keeping x-rays out of landfill.

Household batteries are one of the most common hazardous waste materials that are incorrectly placed in the kerbside bin.

Batteries are a risk to human health and the environment if disposed of inappropriately. They also contain valuable metals such as cadmium, zinc, manganese, cobalt and rare earth metals that may be recovered through recycling.

Recycle your batteries to:

• Remove toxic and hazardous substances from landfill (particularly lead, cadmium and mercury that may contaminate soil and groundwater)

• Minimise the risk of explosions or fires because of inappropriately stored or disposed of lithium metal batteries.

• Reduce the use of finite natural resources in the production of new batteries

• Reduce landfill.

Residents can dispose of old household batteries at Council’s Drouin Customer Service Centre in the battery recycling bank in the reception area.

We also provide free recycling of both household and car/truck batteries at our four transfer stations.(PDF, 880KB)

Baw Baw Shire residents can recycle waste motor oil free of charge at any of our transfer stations during normal operating hours.

The transfer stations are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday.

Silage wrap disposal is charged at $61 per cubic metre at Council's transfer stations. There is also a fee of $11.50 to purchase bulka bags. 

You are welcome to bring your silage wrap loose to the transfer station where a bulka-bag is set up to put your silage wrap in (at a cost of $11.50 per bulka bag).

The charge to dispose of silage wrap has been introduced as unfortunately there are currently no processors accepting silage wrap and it's going into landfill.

Deposit your empty and clean (triple rinsed) farm chemical containers at Council transfer stations, commonly known as tips.

• Containers include non-returnable crop protection, dairy chemicals, liquid fertilisers and animal health chemical containers displaying the drumMUSTER symbol on the drum or label.
• The program does not accept petroleum or liquid chlorine containers.
• The caps should not be left on the container but may be brought in separately if they are clean.
• Any uncleaned or partly filled containers will not be accepted.
• For quantities larger than 20 drums, users are requested to phone the tips to book in for a delivery time to ensure that inspectors are available.

ChemClear, AgSafe Limited, runs the national ChemClear Chemical Collection program for the collection and disposal of unwanted rural chemicals by a booking arrangement.

You can dispose of your unwanted or obsolete agvet chemicals at scheduled collections throughout the year.

Free collection of chemicals:

• with readable labels
• still in original containers
• not mixed with other products
• within 2 years of expiry or de-registration.

Fee for service available for other agvet chemicals.

There are currently no scheduled collections in Baw Baw Shire.
