Council is regularly contacted by community members seeking approval to install memorials such as seats, statues, and plaques in public open spaces. Through these requests Council has identified the need for a formal policy and position on commemorative memorials on Council land.

The draft policy has been developed to ensure that the organisation has a consistent approach when contacted by community members who are seeking to install a commemorative memorial and that Council's open spaces are maintained in a way that preserves their characteristics for the benefit of the broader community.

Which spaces will the policy apply to?

The draft Memorials Policy is proposed to apply to Council owned public open spaces, including:

  • Parks and reserves
  • Roads
  • Roadsides and streetscapes
  • Recreational facilities under Baw Baw Shire ownership or management and accessible to the general public
