Consultation Closed - Environmental Sustainability Strategy

  • Project typeCommunity Consultation
  • Project scheduleCommunity consultation closed at 5pm on Sunday 10 July

Late last year, Council invited community members to share what matters to them when it comes to environmental sustainability in the Baw Baw Shire.

Using the feedback we received, we drafted a new Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022-2030(PDF, 555KB).

This community consultation opportunity closed at 5pm Sunday 10 July 2022

The Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022-2030 (Strategy) is an overarching planning document for Council’s environmental sustainability work until 2030.

The Strategy sets out long-term goals for achieving positive environmental outcomes. The Strategy’s vision is:

“Council will improve the way it operates for the benefit of the environment and future generations and is active in encouraging the community to do the same”.

Four strategic goals have been developed to guide Council’s efforts in achieving its vision. It is intended that these four goals remain in place for the life of the strategy. These goals include:

  • Goal 1: Reduce energy use and emissions.
  • Goal 2: Create Sustainable and resilient communities.
  • Goal 3: Protect the natural environment.
  • Goal 4: Shift towards a more circular economy.

Under each goal, strategic initiatives have been identified. These strategic initiatives are the key deliverables that will help Council achieve each goal. The strategic initiatives have been developed with a four-year timeframe in mind, as it is intended that the strategy will be reviewed in approximately four years’ time.

To achieve the goals and the four-year initiatives outlined within this Strategy, a biennial operational action plan will be developed and implemented.

Project phases - what's involved?

Phase 1 – Initial consultation (completed)

We undertook Community Consultation in October 2021 to determine what key themes the community wanted to see incorporated into the new Strategy and where Council should be focus on when developing a new Strategy.

Phase 2 - Draft Strategy Consultation (completed)

During phase two, the community has opportunity to provide their final thoughts, ideas, and suggestions on the draft Environmental Sustainability Strategy before it is presented to Council for adoption in late 2022.

Phase 3 - Adopt Environmental Sustainability Strategy (Late 2022)

Once the final round of consultation closes, Council Officers will again collate the feedback provided by the community, and make any required amendments to the Draft Strategy before it is presented to Council for adoption.

What happens next?

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your thoughts and ideas are highly valued and will ultimately form part of Council’s decision making.

Council Officers will consolidate comments and feedback and consider all submissions to assist in making further recommendations to Council.
