Free training opportunities for community groups

Published on 23 January 2020

Local community groups interested in taking their work to the next level are encouraged to attend upcoming free training and development sessions.

Baw Baw Shire Council has partnered with specialist trainers ‘Non Profit Training’ to provide the professional training and development sessions.

Two free sessions are being offered in February 2020, with limited places available:

Budget planning

When: 6.00pm - 8.30pm on Tuesday 4 February 2020
Where: Drouin Civic Centre, 33 Young Street (access via Brynwood Ave)

The session will provide community group leaders with the confidence to be able to understand the fundamentals of budgeting. It will help them to formulate a budget for their projects/programs and use a budgeting tool to help them forward plan and manage their programs success.

Topics include:

  • Budgeting for programs/organisation
  • A rundown of a good budget process
  • Budgeting for grant applications
  • Numbers we know and guess
  • Reporting against the budget

Anyone interested in attending this session must RSVP by Thursday 30 January 2020 to community.planning@bawbawshire.vic.gov.au

Volunteers

When: 6.00pm - 8.30pm on Tuesday 11 February 2020
Where: Drouin Civic Centre, 33 Young Street (access via Brynwood Ave)

The session is designed to tease out what community groups most need from their volunteering workforce, breaking down those needs and creating a volunteering plan to match. It will help to maximise engagement with potential volunteers and give some tips and tricks to promote the organisation and potential volunteering opportunities.

Topics include:

  • Volunteer position descriptions
  • Induction checklist and materials
  • Volunteer recognition program
  • Finding committee members
  • Structuring committees to fit the work

Anyone interested in attending this session must RSVP by Thursday 6 February 2020 to community.planning@bawbawshire.vic.gov.au

All community groups are encouraged to take up the opportunity to broaden their skills and understanding of core community group functions.

In their anonymous feedback, community participants of previous sessions said they were “highly satisfied” with the training. They agreed that the take-home materials were useful and that the mix of listening, discussion and activities was good.

For more information, interested groups are encouraged to call Council on 5624 2411 or email community.planning@bawbawshire.vic.gov.au

Quotes attributable to Mayor Cr Danny Goss

“Community groups do such important work to plan community events, lobby for local issues and help develop their towns and communities. By providing these sessions we hope to support and empower these groups to achieve greater outcomes. We encourage all community groups to come along to the free sessions.”
