Council created a dynamic new skate park, multi-play recreation space and recreational vehicle (RV) parking area in Rawson. This community area now provides a space for people of all ages to come together and have fun, relax and be active. Featuring varied skate park elements, a three point line basketball court, picnic tables, grassed areas and more, there's something for everyone.

The RV parking area provides a suitable place for tourists to stop when in the area and provide a boost to the local economy.

This project was delivered in partnership with Regional Development Victoria, who contributed $322,782 towards the delivery of the project. The remaining $161,391 was contributed by Council through the 2020/21 Capital Works Program.

Background

A new skate park, half basketball/netball court and tennis hit up wall in Rawson are recommendations in the Rural Recreation Reserve Masterplan Stage 1 Review 2019, which covers the rural townships Athlone, Buln Buln, Ellinbank, Hallora, Jindivick, Neerim South and Rawson. The Masterplan was was adopted by Council on 26 June 2019.

Significant community consultation including the development of a Project Reference Group and local stakeholder engagement was completed between November 2017 and late 2019, ensuring the new skate park and RV area met the needs and expectations of the local community. The Project Reference Group and identified local stakeholders assisted to determine a suitable location, develop and refine the project scope and concept designs utilised for the funding application.

In January 2020, Council submitted a funding application to the Victorian Government via Regional Development Victoria for a combined Skate Park and Recreational Vehicle park project. In May 2020, Council received notification that the application through the Regional Infrastructure Fund was successful, allowing the project to move to the delivery stage.
