Walking and Cycling Trail Maps

There are so many great walks and cycling trails to explore in Baw Baw Shire.

For a number of downloadable and printable maps and booklets, visit the Walking and Cycling Trail Maps webpage.

We have also put together the Walk/Ride Baw Baw booklet, a 74 page guide to local paths. You can pick up a booklet from any Customer Service Centre or request one by Emailing Recreation or by phoning 5624 2411.

Share the Path

For information about rules and safe behaviours when sharing walking and cycling paths, visit the VicRoads website.

Follow these tips when sharing the path:

  • Keep left unless overtaking
  • Overtake on the right
  • Ring a bell, call "passing" and slow down when passing others from behind
  • Dogs must be under effective control
  • Take litter with you or dispose of it in the bins provided, including dog poo.

Swooping Magpies

Magpies generally breed between August to October and swooping can occur during this time. To find out more information visit the VIctorian Government's Environment, Land, Water and Planning website.

Walking Groups

Walking groups are a great way to get active and meet new friends. There are a number of groups in the area organised by the Baw Baw Jolly Walkers and the Heart Foundation.

Bike Riding

On-Road Cycling

On-road cycling is one of the most popular sports in Baw Baw Shire and attracts thousands of cyclists to the region each year. The area has beautiful and challenging roads for all fitness levels. Recreational On-Road Cycling Groups

A number of informal recreational ride groups meet each week. As these rides are not organised by Council, visit the relevant websites to confirm dates, times and locations.

  • Ladies Only Road Ride. This ride departs from Frankies in Warragul,  on a Wednesday morning at 6.00am. The approximate distance of the ride is from 30 to 40 kilometres.
  • Darnum Saturday Ride.  This is a recreational road ride departing from Darnum on a Saturday morning at 8.00am. The approximate distance is from 30 to 40 kilometres. The ride finishes with a drink at the Stump Tea Rooms in Darnum. 

Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking is an increasingly popular and adventurous off road sport. There are two designated mountain biking tracks in Baw Baw Shire.

Erica Mountain Bike Park

Located in Erica, about a half hour drive from Warragul, the Erica Mountain Bike Park has a newly established network of trails of about 30 kilometres. It's located in between the Tyers Rail Trail and the Walhalla Goldfields Rail Trail. The Park is on Department of Sustainabilty and Environment land with local volunteers creating and maintaining the tracks. Maps can be obtained from the Gippsland MTB website.

Mount Baw Baw

Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort has a network of cross country mountain bike trails and one competition standard downhill mountain bike track. The downhill track is only open during events. The cross country trails are closed during winter. For more information and maps of the cross country trails visit the Mt Baw Baw website or the Gippsland MTB website.
