Longwarry Preschool Community Update

Council is seeking to inform the community about the evolving situation regarding kindergartens in Cardinia Shire and potential impacts on the Longwarry Preschool.

Cardinia Shire Council has appointed a new service provider for Early Years Management (EYM) of their kindergarten and preschools for 2018 onwards.

The Longwarry Preschool, although geographically located in Baw Baw Shire, operates under an EYM which is predominately based in neighbouring Cardinia Shire, meaning that the facility may face implications as a result of the change.

It’s important to note that the situation is still evolving and an outcome is not yet final.

Baw Baw Shire Council has always worked in partnership with existing service provider Kinders Together in relation to their management of the Longwarry Preschool, and will continue to do so for the remainder of the year.

EYM providers are required to have a minimum of three kindergartens under their care. After the loss of their services in Cardinia Shire, Kinders Together may not be able to retain the management of Longwarry Preschool.

Should this be the case, Baw Baw Shire Council officers will work closely with the Preschool and the Longwarry Community, as well as Kinders Together and the Department of Education and Training to investigate the most appropriate new EYM.

Council will then continue to provide support to the kindergarten’s Parent Advisory Group and staff as they transition to the new provider.

Council is very aware of the stressful nature of this process, and Council officers have already made contact with all partners in this process.

Letters of offer for four year old kindergarten placement for 2018 will be sent to parents in August. This will still happen for Longwarry Preschool, based on the proposed modelling and session schedule put forward by Kinders Together.

Council understands that there was surveying of the kindergarten community prior to this model being proposed. Given that this is the current understanding of the community need, it is anticipated that any new provider will adopt this program for the 2018 kindergarten year.

If any changes are to be made, Council officers will communicate this to families as soon as possible. Council will also work closely with a new provider to communicate any changes to fee structure that might result from a change in EYM.

Any concerned parents are welcome to contact Baw Baw Shire Council’s Family and Children’s Services Coordinator on 5624 2411 to discuss their concerns.
