News>Lights switched on at Burke Street Netball Courts
| Mayor Cr Ruth McGowan officially opened the newly upgraded lights at the Burke St netball facilities in Warragul on Monday.
Baw Baw Shire Council contributed $11,000 to the project and the committee of management contributed almost $30,000 in addition to their time and effort over the many years of planning and fundraising. Cr McGowan said “Congratulations and well done to everyone who has participated in the twilight season and has had to wait so long for this dream to come to fruition.
Thank you to the current committee of management for keeping faith with the whole idea of the additional lighting. The project has evolved and changed over time but I’m sure that everyone will agree that the installation of the lights at this facility will add much value to the forthcoming netball season.”
Cr McGowan congratulated the WDNA (Warragul District Netball Association) committee for their long-running fund-raising effort through hosting the Twilight competition to raise the necessary funds for the lights project. Each team that entered was asked to pay a levy towards the cost of the lights. This money has been saved and invested until sufficient funds were raised to cover the costs of the lights.
The upgrade of lighting is the one of two major projects that were identified by the then current committee of management that has now been completed.
The newly installed lights will help to accommodate the growing popularity of the twilight netball season by the WDNA. The lack of adequate lighting in the past was a deterrent in expanding the size of the competition to accommodate the increased interest from netball players. It was also a difficult logistical nightmare juggling teams around limited court availability.
The first project – repairing of the courts surface was finalised a couple of years ago. The committee of management submitted two applications for Community Facility Grants in 2006 and both were approved. The courts were repaired in early 2007 using funds made available from Baw Baw Shire Council. | |
