| Baw Baw Shire Council’s bushfire recovery team recently organised a seminar for local Community Recovery Committee (CRC) members at Gypsy Creek last week
The aim of the seminar was for CRC members to stay updated on recent bushfire recovery efforts and network together.
Baw Baw Shire Council Mayor Councillor Ruth McGowan said the event was aimed at ensuring people most affected by the devastating fires earlier this year remained up to date on recovery efforts.
``It’s so important that we have these events to ensure all information is getting out to the necessary recipients,’’ Cr McGowan said. ``With so much happening within the bushfire recovery it’s vital that committee members are kept up to date on what is affecting their communities and the people within them as well as what their own roles involve as committee members.”
``It’s reassuring to see great turnouts at these events, with more than 30 people from fire-affected areas attending, including Drouin West, Longwarry, Jindivick and Labertouche.’’
Guest speaker Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (VBRRA) chair Christine Nixon also spoke to committee members about the Authority’s role and its bushfire recovery efforts to date.
Ms Nixon spoke to the group about difficulties in distributing funds that had been raised for the bushfire recovery program and highlighted the fact that more than 900 projects had been raised for funding across the state.
She stressed that all projects were required to meet the criteria in order to receive funds, which included ensuring projects were of value and assisted the community in bushfire recovery.
Funding has been made available for regeneration of community spaces; recording of bushfire history within communities; activities of young people and community information activities.
Ms Nixon thanked group members for their efforts in representing their communities and for working tirelessly and selflessly throughout what she described as difficult times.
Members of the CRC will continue to receive updated information as part of bushfire recovery efforts in the area.
